Computer research and training building, Hampshire

An extension to a classical country house for a software research company in a contrasting modern classical style. The new building is built of brick and stucco with giant Doric columns built from coursed tiles. It has a dramatic scale and, controversially, double-glazed modern windows. It was designed in 1982 and is a recognised early example of the new direction in architecture at that time that gave literal references to historic architecture, which continues to this day and established Robert Adam as a pioneer and leader. It received the American Award to Distinguished Service in Environmental Planning in 1986 and featured in the Prince of Wales’s book A Vision of Britain in 1989.
