Hampshire: Robert Adam’s own house

Hampshire: Robert Adam’s own house.

Sitting in a discrete wooded clearing in a small village close to Winchester, the new house combines the local vernacular with classical and arts and crafts features. A simple brick façade faces the road with a two-level front door decorated with a swag of the fruits of the county. On the south garden side, bay windows, a large Venetian window, decorative brickwork and flint from the excavations, create a more open character. The plan is based on the central 6 metre (20 foot) cubic room, which gives access to more intimate rooms around three sides, the south side facing the garden.
