Wiltshire: new house in Salisbury Cathedral Close.

Wiltshire: new house in Salisbury Cathedral Close.

The first new house in Salisbury Cathedral close for more than a century and an early work of Robert Adam. Situated next to the Bishop’s Palace, obtaining a consent to build the house was difficult, relying on ecclesiastical as well as local government permission. A formal three-bay front with rusticated brick pilasters and a brick pediment face the Cathedral Close and an open garden front looks directly over the River Avon and its famous water meadows, as painted by John Constable.
